Staying safe at home

You can help yourself to stay safe, reduce the risk of having an accident and make your home a safer place to live.

Be aware of doorstep safety

Everyone is vulnerable to ‘cold callers’. This might be especially applicable if you are lonely, isolated or infirm, with not much contact from family, friends or neighbours.

  • Don't let people that you do not know enter your house
  • Always check for identification
  • Keep external doors locked, even when you’re at home.

Nuisance calls and junk mail

Nuisance calls and junk mail can come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and can be inconvenient and annoying at the best of times.

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) (external link) is a free service where you can register to opt out of receiving unsolicited and unwanted sales and marketing telephone calls that are disruptive and stressful.

The Mailing Preference Service (MPS) (external link) is a free service where you can have your name and home address in the UK removed from lists used by the direct mail industry.
